Medical vs. Recreational Marijuana

What is the difference between medical and recreational marijuana? At Trust, we cater to both customer groups, ensuring both therapeutic strains for our medical clients and a casual good time for those enjoying cannabis recreationally.

There is no essential difference between medical and recreational marijuana, though some strains are more favored for their medical effects. The difference lies in access and certain rules. Medical marijuana patients can own more cannabis, buy more at one time, and have a much lower tax rate. They may also be granted special medical discounts.

Recreational marijuana can be purchased by any ID-carrying adult over the age of 21 at the normal retail price, tax rate, and amount limitations.

Marijuana FAQs: Get Your FAQs Straight

Can you consume marijuana anywhere in Colorado?

In Colorado, marijuana can only be consumed in a private and lawful location. It cannot be consumed in public places, in the view of the public, or on a property where cannabis use has not been authorized. However, you can consume marijuana in every county in Colorado, even those where dispensaries are not permitted.

The best place to consume marijuana is inside your own home, or at a friend’s house where they have permitted marijuana use. A select number of private venues may permit marijuana use in private rooms, such as 420-friendly lodgings and cannabis lounges.

How old do you have to be to buy marijuana?

You must be 21 or older with a government-issued photo ID to purchase marijuana in Colorado.

Can you use an out-of-state medical card in Colorado?

No. If you want to access medical marijuana in Colorado, you will need a Colorado medical card. However, medical marijuana card-holders from other states can purchase recreational marijuana.

Do I need a medical card to buy marijuana?

No. Colorado supports both recreational and medical marijuana sales.  Medical patients can possess more cannabis and pay a lower tax rate, but you do not need a medical card to buy recreational marijuana.

How do I get a medical card?

To get a Colorado medical marijuana card, you must first be diagnosed with a qualifying condition and get a doctor’s recommendation. You can then go through the application process to receive a medical marijuana card.

Is all marijuana smoked?

Not at all! Marijuana is available in a wide range of products and enjoyment methods. Distilled cannabis oil can be vaped. Cannabis concentrates can be “dabbed”. Cannabis infusions are used to make edibles including baked goods, gummies, cannabis drinks, and cooking oil for DIY recipes. Tinctures can be dripped under the tongue and topicals are used on the skin or in a bath.

What is the difference between flower, edibles, and cartridges?

Cannabis flower is the dried flower of the cannabis plant. It can be crumbled to smoke in pipes, bongs, and pre-rolls or cooked into edibles. Smoked cannabis flower takes effect within a few minutes and lasts up to an hour or two.

Cannabis edibles are foods and drinks made by infusing cannabis oil into ingredients like olive oil, butter, milk, or honey. Consumed edibles take effect within 30 minutes and can last 4-8 hours.

Cannabis cartridges contain distilled cannabis oil for vaping. It is turned into a smoke-free vapor in a vape-pen which is less harmful than smoking, but also potentially more powerful. Vape from cannabis cartridges takes effect instantly and lasts for one or two hours.

How much can I purchase at one time?

Recreational cannabis users can possess (and purchase) up to 2 ounces of cannabis flower or up to 8 grams of cannabis concentrates at one time.

How to read a cannabis package

When reading a cannabis package, check for THC, CBD, and terpene percentages.

  • THC percentage tells you the strength of the psychoactive effects.
  • CBD percentage indicates the strength of secondary therapeutic effects
  • Terpene blend can tell you the possible combined effects like energy, focus, or sleepiness.

What is the difference between indica, sativa, and hybrid?

Indica strains tend to be more relaxed and sleepy. Sativa strains tend to be more energetic and wakeful. Hybrid provides unique blends of effects based on the parent strains and terpene balance.
